The Greek philosopher Aristotle classified a speaker’s persuasive abilities into three modes of appeal – Ethos, Logos, Pathos. Modes of Appeal are useful to design because we can craft communications in an appropriate manner, to audience values, for more affective outcome.

Graphic Tool-kit
(1) Review the Modes of Appeal Worksheet.
(2) For each of the 3 modes gather 3 or more graphic components* that would be useful when communicating via that particular appeal. Total 9+. Label the mode on each. Post to blogs for evaluation.
*Graphic components include but are not limited to:
• typeface selection
• color palette
• image rendering method (e.g. wood carving, product shot)
• material or production method (e.g. augmented reality, corrugated cardboard)
• abstract graphic support element (e.g. dingbats, dotted line)
• historical or contemporary trends (e.g. Victorian, DIY. Use Graphic Style by Steven Heller to categorize historic styles. This book is on reserve.)
